How to Sign a Document on iPhone Without Printing It

Updated: 2026-10-03

Someone sends you a form to sign, and you don't own a printer. You don't need one. Your iPhone can turn a paper form or an emailed PDF into a signed copy in a few minutes. Here's how, for both cases.

If the document is already a PDF

Apple's Markup tool can add a signature to a PDF you've received by email or saved to Files.

  1. Open the PDF in Mail or the Files app.
  2. Tap the Markup button (the pen icon).
  3. Tap the + button and choose Add Signature. Draw your signature with your finger the first time; iOS remembers it.
  4. Drag the signature into place and resize it to fit the line.
  5. Tap Done, then share or reply with the signed file.

If the document is on paper

Paper forms need one extra step: scan the form first, then sign the scan. Doing both in one app keeps it quick. In ScanIt the flow looks like this:

  1. Scan every page of the form. ScanIt captures the page edges automatically.
  2. Apply an enhancement mode so the printed text is crisp and readable.
  3. Open the signature step and draw your signature, or reuse a saved one.
  4. Place the signature on the right page and line.
  5. Export as a PDF and send it by Mail, Messages or any app in the share sheet.

Make the signed copy look professional

  • Scan on a flat, contrasting surface so the page edges are clean.
  • Sign with a slow, steady stroke. Zoom in before drawing if the line is small.
  • Keep the whole form in one PDF, in page order, rather than separate photos.
  • Name the file clearly, for example "Signed - Rental agreement - Oct 2026".

Is a signature added on iPhone legally valid?

In many countries an electronic signature is accepted for everyday agreements, but the rules depend on where you are and what you're signing. Some documents, such as certain government, property or notarised forms, may need a handwritten or certified digital signature. If you're unsure, ask the person who sent you the document what they accept.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sign a PDF on iPhone for free?

Yes. Open the PDF in Mail or Files, tap the Markup button, tap + and choose Add Signature.

How do I sign a paper form without a printer or scanner?

Scan the form with your iPhone camera, add your signature to the scan, and export it as a PDF. A scanner app with a built-in signature step, such as ScanIt, does all three in one place.

Can I save my signature to reuse it?

Yes. iOS Markup remembers signatures you add, and ScanIt lets you reuse a saved signature or draw a new one.

Is an electronic signature legally binding?

It is accepted for many everyday agreements in many countries, but requirements vary by country and document type. Check with the person or organisation that asked for the signature.
